Life between Doing and Being

Pull up a chair…this isn’t the highlight reel.

By Amy Burford

Pull up a chair…this isn’t the highlight reel. This is the behind-the-scenes version, the one we’d talk about over coffee when we’ve both decided to be a little more honest than usual.

These will be my Sunday Coffee Check-Ins—a little time-out from the swirl of the week, where I share my real-time reflections and you’re welcome to bring your own. Because the gift of a community isn’t just in telling our stories—it’s in sharing our wisdom, too.

The Whiplash

As of last Wednesday, we were relocated and my daughter’s school in Texas was set to start in just under a week. I had my mental calendar lined up: softball practices, time for Target runs, maybe a “last week of summer” ice cream date.

By Thursday morning, the plan had flipped. Her and my husband are leaving in a week to return to Florida and I’m staying in Texas for the short term.

It felt like my whole season tilted on its axis overnight. One minute, I was hunting the right water bottle. The next, I was packing an entire room that I didn’t see coming.

The Two Voices in My Head

Strategist: Step aside, I’ve got a calendar and a list for this (written in multi-color pens)

Truth-Teller: Breathe. Also, maybe cry.

If you’re a Type A or a recovering Type A (I’m working on it), you know this tug-of-war. My Strategist wants to do, solve, and “handle it” before the emotional dust has time to settle. My Truth-Teller knows the deeper work is in being—letting myself feel the grief and sit in the discomfort of change.

Why I’m Here

If you’ve been here - standing in the gap between what just changed and what comes next - you’re not alone.  Wondering what the right and wrong decision could even mean in this moment.

I’m not here to hand you a perfect plan. I’m here to share the bridge I keep crossing between doing and being, so maybe you’ll see your own reflection on the way. I’ll tell the truth about my light and my shadow as I navigate my first 6 weeks by myself since I was a college student!  The world is changing too and doesn’t need more filtered highlight reels! And maybe I’ll just read this in a few months and see my own growth and opportunity in the mirror after writing it down.

Until Next Sunday

Next week, I’ll tell you how I borrowed the same tools I use to guide corporate transformations and applied them to this personal one. Spoiler: they work just as well in boardrooms as they do in living rooms—especially when your living room feels like an emotional construction zone.

So pour your coffee, join me here, and if you feel like it—hit reply and tell me what’s been shifting for you. That’s how this stops being just my story, and starts becoming ours.
